The Spanish wine making regions are split into Northern and Central Spain. The Southern area is re-known for their sherry vineyards. This large coverage of wine growing regions means that Spain has the largest area of land dedicated to viticulture of any wine producing country.
Like France and Italy, Spain also classifies its wine under the Denominacion de Origen (DO) regulations. The following classification for red wines are: Crianza classified wines are wines which are two years old that have spent at least 12 months in a cask. Resevas are three years old with at least one year in a cask. Whilst Gran Reservas have been in a cask for two years and bottled for three.
In the North and Central Spain, there are many fabulous wine regions such as the famous Rioja, Navarra and La Mancha in Central Spain producing many of Spain’s finest tables wines. The South is dedicated to producing Sherry, around the town of Jerez.
