Despite their youth, they have only been selling wine commercially since 1987, Gibbston Valley produce some of the worlds most celebrated wines and have secured an international reputation for their rich, aromatic pinot noir. At Hard To Find Wines we supply a melange of Gibbston Valley wines starting at under £16.00 per bottle, but what is it that gives them their edge?
Gibbston Valley’s founder, Alan Brady, has a passion for wine; he started his first vineyard as a hobby with international acclaim less not even a twinkle in his eye. In the early 1980’s he began his experimentations with wine making by purchasing previously unutilised land in the dramatic central Otago region of New Zealand, bordered by snow-capped mountains it is to this day the southernmost vineyard in the world.
No one could have imagined what Alan would one day achieve; his vines produced a calibre of wine far exceeding his expectations and the stage was quickly set for his endeavours to bring exceptional wine to the world.
There were, of course, sceptics to contend with along the journey. The mountains protect the region from New Zealands maritime climate, this causes extreme weather conditions: the summer is very hot, the winter bitterly cold, many believed these conditions to be detrimental to wine production, but not Alan. He saw the benefits of Otago being the only region in New Zealand to have essentially a continental climate zone that, if handled correctly, could produce the most intense and vibrant wines.
