    £23.50

A bottle of Chateau Filhot Grand Cru Classe Sauternes 2009

A luxurious Sauternes from Bordeaux with a silky mouthfeel, slightly sticky, apricots and peaches, lychee and hints of eucalyptus.

    Mixed case

    Luxury Christmas Selection (6 bottles)
    £245.00

A half case of luxury Christmas wines

Six bottles are included in this luxury selection of Christmas wines:
    Pol Roger Brut Champagne NV
Giles Morat Sur La Roche Pouilly Fuisse 2016
    Glenwood Grand Duc Chardonnay 2015
Robert Mondavi Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

  • Five Fun Itinerary Ideas - Cape Winelands

It's the start of the summer season in South Africa and that means it's the time of year that visitors from the UK make their way to the Cape Winelands. Here are five must do's to add to any itinerary when visiting Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.

    Picnics at Mont Rochelle

In addition to the Country Kitchen and Miko Restaurant, Mont Rochelle offers delicious picnics baskets. Two adults can share a basket that includes cheeses, charcuteries, salads, wraps and more (especially the delicious dessert). Kids under 12 receive their own basket with a child-appropriate menu.

For more information, visit Mont Rochelle's website here.

MCC and canapes at Le Lude

We always have time for bubbles and the perfect spot to enjoy a tasting of Method Cap Classique is at Le Lude in Franschhoek. Their enchanting and beautiful setting complements their wonderful wines and their canape tasting is definitely worth trying. Le Lude offers three canape options, including a selection for vegetarians.

The rose garden at Le Lude

While at Le Lude, make sure you take in their glorious rose garden and the views across the surrounding Franschhoek mountains.

For more information, visit Le Lude's website here.

Find Wine and Food Pairing at GlenWood

The tranquil setting at GlenWood is the perfect backdrop for a very innovative tasting experience. On arrival, you will be presented with a specifically designed tasting palette offering six tastings that compliment six of GlenWood's wines. For more information, visit Paradise Stables' website here.

Duck Parade and Saturday Market at Vergenoegd

The very first vineyard at the start of the Stellenbosch Winelands, closest to Cape Town, is the Vergenoegd Low Wine Estate. Along with very good wines, they also have a very novel parade by their pest controlling Indian Runner Ducks a few times a day.

    Vergenoegd Duck Parade

Each Saturday, Vergenoegd hosts a market from 9am until 3pm, offering crafts, food, beverages, wine tastings and live entertainment. If fitness is your thing, then why not start Saturday off with an early morning run at 8am, hosted by Vergenoegd.

For more information on these and other activities offered by Vergenoegd, visit their website here.

There are so many other activities to enjoy when visiting the Cape Winelands. Are there any others you are looking forward to when visiting? Let us know and we can feature those on an upcoming blog post.

  • Just in time for International Pinotage Day!

Half case of South African Pinotage on offer!

The 2nd Saturday every October celebrates South Africa's own grape varietal, Pinotage. Wineries producing Pinotage in SA mark the International Pinotage Day with events, promotions and wine tastings.

The grape produces deep red wine with cherry, tobacco, liquorice and earthy flavours. Despite its reputation, good quality Pinotage should not smell of acetone! Carefully produced and aged, it should have aromas of red and dark fruit, graphite, coffee and chocolate.

    History of Pinotage

    vine-2887715_1920

The varietal was created in 1925 by South African, Abraham Izak Perold. Perold was the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University. Attempting to combine the best qualities of Cinsault (called Hermitage in SA) and Pinot Noir, Perold's experiments resulted in a grape that was easy to grow but not necessarily easy to work with when creating great wines.

    Future of Pinotage

    Black grapes on a vine

While the majority of Pinotage is produced in South Africa, the wine is experiencing a revival with winemakers around the globe taking up the challenge of creating a great Pinotage.

The latest vineyard to experiment with this grape is Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens in Horsham, so within five years, we could be seeing an English Pinotage!

Half Case of Pinotage now only £60!

Half case of South African Pinotage

We have selected 6 wines we believe best exemplify the unique Pinotage grape, from wineries in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Swartland and the far Northern Cape.

  • Hard To Find Wines welcomes Iona Wines!

Iona Wines, owned by Andrew and Roxy Gunn, is situated at 420m above sea-level in the Elgin Valley in South Africa and is proud to be the coolest vineyard in South Africa.

Planting began in 1998, with Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot the first vines planted. These were followed by Chardonnay, Semillon and Pinot Noir. Shortly after Iona's first vintage in 2001, they became one of South Africa’s top producers of Sauvignon Blanc.

Iona’s close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the prevailing southerly winds result in their grapes ripening up to two months later than other Cape vineyards.

Andrew says, "Wines are made in the vineyard, and the best wines come from cool to moderate temperature climes, with low summer rainfall and low potential soils."

An aerial view at Iona Wines in Elgin, South Africa

    Sustainable Practices

To ensure the wines they produce are lively, Iona uses no synthetic fertilisers, snail pellets or insecticides in their vineyards. All compost is created using biodynamic methods and preparations, including manure produced by Iona's five cows!

Winter cover crops of legumes, oats and clovers grow between the vineyard rows. These are used to nourish and mulch the vineyards in turn.

    Chickens at Iona Wines

    Philosophy

Owners Andrew and Rozy put all their focus and passion into Iona. Everything is done in-house as a result.

The team at Iona strives to make wine that "expresses the soils and climate as closely as possible, making use of sustainable farming methods and to maximise the use of natural products in farming and winemaking."
