Dave and Christine Macdonald own and run Bladen Vineyard situated in Marlborough. Focusing on cool climate wines, their Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling are all produced without the use of barrels to promote the freshness of the fruit in the wines. Pinot Noir and Merlot/Malbec on the other hand are shown the best new French oak barriques to enhance the richness of these unmistakable wines.
Bladen itself has only 8 hectares of vines, with other grapes being sourced from friend’s tiny vineyard blocks, some as small as 1.5 acres. With this comes a real hand crafted element to Bladen wines, with almost every grape being scrutinised before being allowed into the final wine production.
For a true Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc you will have to try very hard to find one better than at Bladen, which still manages to be incredible value for money and put many at double the price to shame.
