Harvest at Stony Brook Vineyards
The McNaught family has been making wine in Franschhoek, South Africa since the late 1980s. From the very beginning, Nigel and Joy focussed on creating top-quality wines, something that has been a consistent theme through the family's journey. In 1995, they sold their first farm and bought Stony Brook, a small fruit farm, situated in the southernmost corner of Franschhoek. The McNaughts began replanting the farm with vines and built a small cellar. The Stony Brook label was launched!
In 2011, their son Craig joined the Stony Brook team and took over as winemaker and continued to produce premium, small volume wines. Amongst these is Ovidius, Stony Brook's acclaimed single varietal Tempranillo.
We visited Craig and the team at Stony Brook in time to catch them harvesting their 2020 vintage.
Compared to previous years, which had been affected by drought, this season has been a good one for Franschhoek wine farmers. After initial concerns with up and down weather, the majority of the harvest has produced great results. The expectation is that the wines produced from this year's harvest will have a great flavour profile.
